Rising damp occurs when the damp proof course (DPC), a plastic membrane moisture barrier that is installed low down in the walls of a building during contruction, fails or has not been properly installed. The damp proof course is intended to prevent the upward movement of mositure, by capillary action, up the walls of a building, when it fails to do so then problems associated with rising damp can occur. These include damp blotches on walls, mould, cement plaster decay, peeling paint and the presence of chalky salt efflorescence visble on the affected walls and structure. Apart from potential health hazards if left untreated rising damp can cause structural damage to the buidling.
Penetrating or lateral damp occurs when water is able to penetrate the walls of a building from the exterior due to built up external ground contact with the wall, porous bricks or blocks, cracked and damaged plaster or low quality motar joints between bricks. THe symptoms of penetrating or lateral damp are similar to those of rising damp and if left untreated can also result in structural damage.
